The New Monster in the Stranger Things Season 3 Trailer Is Actually Puberty

It's summertime in Hawkins, Indiana, and things are getting...awkward. (But also, still scary.)

Stranger Things is finally coming back this summer after a longer-than-usual hiatus, and those meddling kids are back with vim and vigor, doing 1980's things like you wouldn't believe. You know, things that have long fallen by the wayside in these modern times: playing with remote control cars, going to malls, and hitting puberty in an age devoid of Instagram and Snapchat.

That's the main conflict in the Stranger Things season 3 trailer (or Stranger Things 3, to keep with the series naming convention). These kids are getting older, and they’re ready to do more than hang out in the basement playing Dungeons and Dragons. And, you know, fighting monsters. Which they still very much do

The new trailer is heavy on summertime wistfulness, and light on the, uh, strange things. But the glimpses of the latter that we get are real good, and there's all sorts of other hints hidingin the fringes. Intense moments, like a hitman-looking dude with a gun stalking a carnival. But more low-key omens like Steve Harrison (and his terrific hair) getting a job at the mall or a massive protest sweeping through the town of Hawkins. Those are some...pretty normal things. Which, after two intense years of the Upside-Down and demogorgons and superpowers, might be stranger than anything else.
