What To Buy Now

This week, the e-comm gods flipped the Spring-Summer sale switch. That’s right: Basically everything you’ve had your eye on in advance of summer is now 30-50% off, including some pre-fall collections. Get after it at SSENSE, Matches, Totokaelo, and Farfetch, to name a few—and see the full list of sales to shop this long weekend over at GQ.

It’s not often you come across a major Fashion Scoop in the timeline. But Jake Woolf, our eagle-eyed colleague at GQ, noticed that Shia LaBeouf and Kanye West (whose personal styles are not all that dissimilar) are clearly wearing the same hat in these pictures. LaBeouf got the US Army Armor School cap when training for Fury, and in the time since it’s somehow made it to Ye, who wore it to Disneyland this week. Get the full story on this melding of style maverick minds here.

This Week in Data Visualization

Here’s something you didn’t think you needed: a color chart of every cardigan Mister Rogers ever wore. Chronicled by a super fan, the chart reveals a few key trends: Mister Rogers preferred reds later in his career, green was the most popular cardigan color, and he had a dark period in the 90's. Ready more about it here.

Retail Report

Though it’s rumored that Supreme will soon be opening a new store in Brooklyn, their Louis Vuitton collaboration-dedicated space might have to wait. This week, a plan to open a pop-up for the insanely-hyped collaboration on Manhattan’s Bond Street was rejected by the community board. Though there’s not really any good place for a hypebeast apocalypse (i.e. the scene outside the Yeezy pop-ups, Palace store opening, etc.), we hope they manage to pop up somewhere—maybe at that potential Brooklyn location.

The Knockoff Economy

Yesterday WWD published a fascinating photoset from Seoul’s Dongdaemun night market to highlight the state of the fashion knockoff scene. Surprisingly, heavyweight luxury brands that have long been jacked seemed in short supply compared to smaller, trendier fashion brands like Off-White, Acne Studios, Palace, and even Margaret Howell. (The big houses were still represented: A fake version of Dior’s “We Should All Be Feminists” t-shirt, WWD reports, was featured at nearly every stall.) Though certainly troubling for smaller brands that might not be able to combat counterfeiting and knockoffs, it’s a unique insight into trends in an increasingly fashion-obsessed city.

Gonz Update

This week GQ Style’s Noah Johnson spent some time picking the brain of skate legend Mark Gonzales (AKA The Gonz) as he wrapped up the last few paintings for a new show at HVW8 gallery in Los Angeles. The show, “Fower Plower,” is now open. Check out photos of the Gonz painting in his studio here, and check out the show if you’re in LA.

Meanwhile, in the NFL

Odell Beckham Jr., the swaggiest NFL player both on and off the field, signed a record shoe deal with Nike this week, worth a reported $29 million over five years. It’ll involve a signature OBJ cleat as well as apparel and “lifestyle oriented products,” according to the Washington Post. The contract is the biggest for any NFL player ever (Odell’s four-year contract with the Giants pays him just over $10 million).
