It’s almost too exhilarating—like skiing a backcountry bowl before 9 am!—to think about all the legends who have been in Aspen lately. Gwyneth Paltrow. Kate Hudson. Goldie Hawn. Leonardo DiCaprio. Mariah Carey.

What’s special about celebrities in Aspen is that the cold air and that special attitude of Americana fancy—it’s like Switzerland, but for cowboys—brings out a very particular strand of celebrity dressing: the Après-Ski Freak Look. We first identified the phenomenon as a major winter 2020 trend in late December, when DiCaprio went to dinner in hiking boots and a strangely weather-agnostic (yet oh-so-right) leather chore coat. It was as if the costume team from Uncut Gems redid The Spy Who Loved Me: it was luxurious because it was so lawless.

But Orlando Bloom has set a new standard for this absurdist mix of athletic apparel and fashion-forward garments. He paired ski pants and black boots with a cowboy hat and an olive green knee-length ski tunic (I guess???) with a purple and persimmon hood. He left his quixotic performance poncho unzipped on either side for ultimate volume and utter freakiness. This is true backcountry-quality Après-Ski Freak dressing. Not for beginners! Orlando’s fit is for pros only! Which means you should absolutely copy it when you’re getting dressed for bottomless mimosas and French toast this weekend.
