The Oscars are the pinnacle of the entire awards season. The most important trophy, best afterparties, and the flashiest outfits. The same high standards for the fashion apply to what’s on the wrist,l: “The Oscars are the time [celebs] want to wear their best watches,” an anonymous publicist for a watch brand told me earlier this week.
The results on Sunday’s red carpet live up to the hype. Attendees like Roger Federer, Ke Huy Quan, and Bradley Cooper all showed up with some of the biggest and most hyped watch releases of last year. Here are all the best watches from the 2024 Oscars red carpet.
Roger Federer’s Rolex Daytona ‘Le Mans’
The biggest release of 2023 is this version of the Daytona released for the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The watch’s subdials take inspiration from the beloved “Paul Newman” variation and the a red ‘100’ on the bezel’s tachymeter. We can always count on Federer to show off the best of the best from Rolex.
Ryan Gosling’s Tag Heuer Carrera Plasma
Gosling is a Tag Heuer ambassador but wearing this watch still feels like ordering off the menu. This is the brand-new Plasma, just announced at the end of January, which features diamonds grown just for this watch. This watch is the perfect capper for Gosling’s run supporting Barbie during this award season. Naturally, the watch features a pink diamond on the dial and as the crown.
Cillian Murphy’s Omega De Ville Prestige 41mm
Omega’s De Ville Prestige collection provides an elegant respite from the brand’s thicker chronos and divers. The newly coronated Best Actor’s version measures 41mm in steel and features a gorgeous pine-green dial in a sun-brushed finish.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph
RDJ’s watch collection mirrors his career arc. What was once bombastic and flashy has mellowed into something classic and shiny. Also, a lot more gold: this version of Reverso is made out of pink gold, a nice compliment to what will surely be Downey’s statuette for best supporting actor.
Bradley Cooper’s Louis Vuitton Tambour
It’s good to be a Louis Vuitton man: Cooper wore a custom LV suit with a rose-gold version of the brand’s revamped and Ozempic-taking Tambour.
Matthew McConaughey’s Jacob & Co. Jean Bugatti
A watch designed to mimic the dashboard of a Bugatti? Only a Jacob & Co.
Dwayne Johnson’s Bulgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT
The Chronograph GMT, part of Bulgari’s award-winning Octo Finissimo collection, remains one of the decade’s coolest watches. It combines a GMT complication and a traditional chronograph in a steel case that measures just 8.75mm thick—it’s about as utilitarian as haute horlogerie gets.
Cord Jefferson’s Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional White Dial
Now here’s a proper watch guy. Cord Jefferson, who won the Best Adapted Screenplay for American Fiction Sunday, sprung for the latest iteration of Omega’s famous Speedmaster. A significant release for Omega, it’s the first NASA-approved Moonwatch in stainless steel to feature a white lacquer dial.
Dwayne Wade’s Cartier Tank Must
Wearing a Tank on the red carpet is like bringing nice wine to a dinner party—a decision that can never steer you wrong. Wade’s Tank is part of the Must line, a more affordable version of the luxury watch.
Chris Hemsworth’s Audemars Piguet X Alyx Royal Oak Chronograph
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Hemsworth wearing this highly desirable collab Royal Oak, which features solid-gold construction and a triple-register chronograph layout. But, man, does this Matthew Williams-designed piece send a statement when paired with a tux!
Simu Liu’s Jacob & Co The World Is Yours Dual Time Zone
Liu’s wrist has the range. He bounces between understated IWC pieces but looks just as comfy with these outrageous Jacob & Co. pieces. This piece’s lacquered blue dial and rose-gold continents belies its more humble inspiration: one of brand founder Jacob Arabo’s first watches he received at 13.
Ke Huy Quan’s Santos-Dumont Micro-Rotor
A 2023 Cartier release with a small plane at 9 o’clock that helps power the whole watch.
Glen Powell’s Tag Heuer Monaco
As Powell ascends to the A-list, he needs a watch to match. The Monaco, with its distinctive square shape made famous by Steve McQueen in Le Mans, is a superstar in its own right.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 101 Reine
The remarkable Caliber 101 movement has been the world’s smallest hand-wound caliber since 1929—nearly a century. Queen Elizabeth II even wore one to her coronation in 1953. Here, it’s powering a beautiful, diamond-studded cocktail watch with a mother-of-pearl dial.
Jeffrey Wright’s Omega De Ville Trésor
One can always count on Jeffrey Wright to put together a dapper look as well as an enchanting performance and this year’s Oscars were no different. The American actor sported an Omega De Ville Trésor in an “up-down” configuration, with a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock and a running seconds display at 6 o’clock.
Sterling K. Brown’s IWC Portugieser Regulateur Tourbillon (ref. IW544603)
This is a heck of a watch to rock with black tie: Measuring 44mm and designed in the style of old “regulator” clocks, it features a tourbillon at 3 o’clock, an hour display at 12 o’clock, a central minutes hand, and a running seconds display at 6 o’clock.
Colman Domingo’s Omega De Ville Prestige
Few people have had a sartorial glow up comparable to Domingo’s this awards season. That continued at the Oscars Sunday night with the help of this Omega that could make sweat pants and an old T-shirt look elegant.
Jon Batiste’s J.N. Shapiro Resurgence
Here’s a real “watch guy” pick: Bandleader Jon Batiste rocked a J.N. Shapiro Resurgence Sunday night. This handcrafted, customizable watch—which is made by American watchmaker Joshua Shapiro in his California atelier—is simply mind blowing in its detail and beauty.
Taylor Zakhar Perez’s Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Tourbillon Retrograde Date Openface
The Kissing Booth series actor Taylor Zakhar Perez wore a seriously complicated Vacheron last night. The Traditionnelle Tourbillon Retrograde Date Openface features an openworked dial with a tourbillon, a retrograde date display, and a 41mm pink gold case.
Joseph Quinn’s IWC Portofino Automatic (ref. IW356517)
Stranger Things actor Quinn sported an elegant choice to accompany his tuxedo: IWC’s Portofino Automatic with a silver dial, applied indices, and the automatic Caliber 35111 movement. Understated and thin at 9.2mm tall, it’s a far cry from the brand’s chunkier, assertive tool watches.
