Since her father won the presidency and she stepped into the White House as one of his official advisers, Ivanka Trump has remained something of a mystery. While she doesn't shy away from the spotlight, the president's daughter working in the White House raises more questions than answers. Like, How is she actually qualified for this? Or, Why did China suddenly start granting her trademark requests? And, What is she doing at the G20 summit?

In an effort to uncover at least some of these answers, reporter Vanessa Grigoriadis has been exhaustively researching Ivanka, and after interviews with 60 friends and colleagues she's created a new podcast called Tabloid: The Making of Ivanka Trump, and she's written a lengthy teaser for New York Magazine.

Grigoriadis confirms a lot of what you might have already suspected about Ivanka: She wants to prove she's independently successful even though she worked for her father for most of her life. She's got no way to influence him at all on policy ideas, so instead she's resorted to leveraging her position in the White House for personal gain and, mostly, ethics rules can't do much to stop her. She's so afraid of how she'll be received in the liberal New York social circles she used to frequent that there's almost no chance she'll return there after she's done in D.C. And she follows 35 Ivanka Trump fan accounts on Instagram.

The most revealing detail though is probably this tidbit:

In her 20s, she said her ideal man, the one she had fantasies about, was Christian Bale in American Psycho playing Patrick Bateman, who is, of course, an ’80s scenester just like her father was back then—suspenders, slicked-back hair, chops up women for a hobby.

American Psycho is, of course, a parody of the craven Manhattan decadence that exploded in the late '80s and early '90s, and in a way that's even weirder than the fact that Christian Bale's character brutally murdered and dismembered women. There's something fundamentally strange about being into a character who lampoons your entire way of life on top of name checking both of your parents during the movie's runtime. But it also begs the question: What don't we know about her husband Jared Kushner?
