Whether you care about clothing or not, knowing what colors look good on you is important if you don’t want people to tell you you look sick all the time. Because an unflattering hue can drown you out in the worst way. Here, a few quick tricks for determining what you’re dealing with when it comes to your complexion, plus some advice on what that means for your wardrobe.

Determine Your Undertone

Your skin’s undertone is either cool, warm, or neutral, no matter how light or dark your skin is on the surface. There are a couple of ways to figure out which team you’re on.

Look at the Veins in Your Wrist. If your skin is light enough that you can see your veins, look at whether they appear blue or green under your skin. The former indicates that you have a cool skin tone while the latter says you have a warm one.

Look at Your Watch. Silver jewelry trends to look good on cool skin tones while gold tends to flatter warm ones. You may instinctively gravitate towards the more flattering metal already.

Look at Your Basics. When it comes to wardrobe essentials, if you go for basic black and white, your skin may be cool, while a preference for ivory and shades of brown hints at a warm undertone.

Look at Your Skin’s Reaction to Sun. People with cool undertones tend to burn more easily than people with warm undertones, who just get darker in the sun.

Confused? If you don’t seem to be falling squarely in one camp, you might have a neutral undertone that can take a variety of colors.
