As Donald Trump's unshackled presidential campaign continues to come apart like a cheap suit, the man's beleaguered handlers roped his wife Melania into damage control in the form of a soft-lit sit-down with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Monday night. For those of us who half-expected the conversation to end with a visibly embarrassed Cooper gingerly patting the knee of a crying Melania and offering to give her the names of some good in-town divorce lawyers, the interview was kind of a letdown, but it was certainly entertaining nonetheless.

Trump made a number of claims that probably prompted lots of viewers to turn into thinking-face emojis, most notably her smiling, demonstrably false assertion that Trump is "kind" and "a gentleman." The most low-key alarming takeaway, though, was Melania nonchalantly dismissing her husband's "locker room talk" (read: horrifying comments about sexual assault) with Billy Bush on the grounds that boys will be boys—literally.

TRUMP: It's kind of two teenage boys. Actually, they should behave better, right?

ANDERSON: He was 59.

TRUMP: Correct. And sometimes I say I have two boys at home—I have my young son, and I have my husband. But I know how some men talk.

Yeesh.

Melania's effort is admirable enough, but if her best argument in favor of her husband's presidential qualifications is really "He is roughly equivalent in temperament and judgment to my ten-year-old child," perhaps the campaign should have picked someone with a slightly different message to share.

The would-be First Lady closed with a shockingly nuanced perspective on social media usage, though:

Social media is very damaging for the children. We need to guide them and teach them about social media because I see a lot of negativity on it and we need to help them.

Hey, this is a pretty good take! She might want to share it with both of her boys, though.
