How Common Got Ready for the 2016 Met Gala
1/13Yesterday, anybody who's anybody — Hollywood celebrities, tech titans, fashion world luminaries — descended upon the Metropolitan Museum in New York City for the annual Met Gala, which celebrate's the institution's spring show (this year's exhibition is Manus x Machina, exploring the dichotomies of handmade garments versus machine-made ones). We caught up with Common, a frequent guest, as he prepped for fashion's biggest night.
2/13We met up with Common at his suite at the Mark Hotel, a stone's throw away from the legendary Metropolitan Museum as he was getting ready with his stylist Micaela Erlanger for the big night. He had just touched down in New York City — his all time favorite city — the day before, and was heading out to Australia on Wednesday, but made a special stop for the Met Gala. "It's not to be missed," he said. "If you're lucky enough to get invited, you go."
3/13Common wore a tuxedo by Calvin Klein Collection, and finished things off with a vintage Rolex.
4/13The performer went monochromatic in an oxblood wool silk tuxedo with a matching shirt and bowtie. While the official dress code of the evening was "tech white tie," Common chose to go for a classic style in an offbeat color.
5/13While opting for all one color can be a risky move, there were slight tonal variations between the shirt and tuxedo, and the sheen helped break the look up so it didn't look like one solid mass, proving that tonal can be done when you play with texture.
6/13While the Met's exhibition focused on technology and the future, some horological standbys will stand the test of time, including a classic Rolex.
