The Suit Color More Guys Should Be Wearing

When it comes to black-tie, there’s less wiggle room to express yourself than normal. It’s one of those times when tradition tends to trump trends, and there’s nothing wrong with just falling in line. Luckily, everyone looks great in a classic black tuxedo, so it doesn’t feel like a burden to do the same thing year after year. The occasional pro will branch out and get away with it. Kanye West, Andy Samberg and Joshua Jackson are in this tribe. Last night, for instance, Jackson wore a Dolce & Gabbana tux in a deep burgundy color—and, as with regular suiting, it looked fantastic.

While Jackson’s not breaking any rules here, this deep, saturated shade is also not the expected choice. Midnight blue is the more common alternative to basic black, in fact, and when you do see burgundy hues, they tend to come in velvet. We rarely hope for trends in eveningwear, but it’d be nice if this color became more of a thing. Black-tie might not need fixing but the occasional upgrade never hurt anybody.
